Imagine a world without Filipinos

Got a forwarded email from a friend whose working abroad. An uplifting featured article from Arab news (A Saudi Arabian English-language daily newspaper).

Imagine a world without Filipinos
Abdullah Al-Maghlooth | Al-Watan, almaghlooth@alwatan.com.sa

Muhammad Al-Maghrabi became handicapped and shut down his flower and gifts shop business in Jeddah after his Filipino workers insisted on leaving and returning home. He says: “When they left, I felt as if I had lost my arms. I was so sad that I lost my appetite.”

Al-Maghrabi then flew to Manila to look for two other Filipino workers to replace the ones who had left. Previously, he had tried workers of different nationalities but they did not impress him. “There is no comparison between Filipinos and others,” he says. Whenever I see Filipinos working in the Kingdom, I wonder what our life would be without them.

Saudi Arabia has the largest number of Filipino workers — 1,019,577 — outside the Philippines. In 2006 alone, the Kingdom recruited more than 223,000 workers from the Philippines and their numbers are still increasing. Filipinos not only play an important and effective role in the Kingdom, they also perform different jobs in countries across the world, including working as sailors. They are known for their professionalism and the quality of their work. continue

Lolo Peping's hands

My dad's nickname is Peping. We called him Lolo Peping because his grandson and grand daughter often called him in that name so we imitates them sometimes. I always knew dad is the best when in comes to gardening and landscaping. He graduated in Agriculture (way back many many years ago) in Baguio City and he was a former irrigation supervisor of DPWH who helped constructed and supervised the Nayong Pilipino in Pasay and the CCP (Cultural Center of the Phils.) in the year 1970's. Then he explored and was exposed in more in-depth training in landscaping when he worked as a gardener in one of the rich family in Saudi Arabia.

Through the years, he tends to our garden in Laguna and in his house in the province. He loves planting root crops and vegetables and we grow eating them fresh. And until now, I see the difference in taste of those fresh vegetables and those that are not.

After some time, i haven't visited them in Laguna when my father in law got sick. I only got a chance to go there when I need to bring Chase to his vet for his last vaccine last Saturday. And when I reached the house, I was amazed on how Papa managed to plant veggies and fruits trees all in our garden and still look spacious. He really is great in that craft. I salute you, Lolo Peping! =)

Take a look on some pics of our garden.

Finally..... Friday!

Friday is the most favorite day for most of us, especially those working and students too... My sister told me last time that Reine, my niece told her that, 'Mama, do you know what is my favorite day?" and my sis replied, "no, what is it?" .. my niece answered.. "it's Friday." =)

Children nowadays do look Friday as the last day of their week and tomorrow they will be able to rest and play and on Sunday, assignment day. They learned to wake up too early because their classes started at 7:00am. And my nephew would ask her Mom every Saturday and Sunday morning when he woke up at the same early time if there's a school that day. When his mommy replied that he has no school because its weekend, he will thank his mom and went back to sleep.

For us working, i can't deny that i look forward for every Friday to come. I can't barely move anything in our house because i was too tired from work and from almost 2 hours and 3 rides home. That's why when our company announced that our office will transfer to Paranaque, i can't wait for August to come. After 5 years, i can finally find time and focus on other things at home even after work.

So, can you blame me if i always wish that any day would be Friday?

A blissfull Wedding

I'm happy to hear news of people that are getting married. Those stories of love, pain and gain and finally the moment of truth. I'm talking to my office mate whose friend and her office mate in their head office are getting married and she's the candle sponsor. She's telling me details on the wedding dress, the motifs, some gown arrangements and she's asking me about my church wedding years ago. Those preparations, pressures, headaches, schedules and on detailing every plans are the most hard jobs for the couples, especially for the bride to be.

I remember those wedding blues, aside from the fact that I'm really on the diet that time, and i really wanted to eat (haha!) and I'm so stressed that every wrong moves and failed plans sent me crying out load to my room and made my hubby (bf that time) scratching his head because he can't seems to pacify me (and my topak). But over all, we really had so much fun preparing for our wedding, he was keen to every details and he helped me a lot. And one thing I can't forget during our marriage seminar in Malate Church, he made all those fellow couples a dose of his humor and gave them quite a laugh.

I knew it well, and if i had to remarried again to my hubby, i surely know now what to do. After our wedding, i knew it's not that perfect as many bride dream off, i don't like some things happened that day, but all the wishes and greetings and nice comments that our wedding are so cute and well prepared chased all my disappointments away.

And i went to a site that tell tales on what happened to their weddings and it made me smile. I'm not alone after all. There's a forum there where the poster named the thread as 'Visitors from hell' =) for those who eat and run, taking all the souvenirs, doing their own stuffs in the middle of the program, bringing their children even if the invitation stated "for adults event" only and many more. And for my own 'pasaway' visitors, well, i just think, I'm happy and very pretty that day and no one can ever made me frown.

Above all that, the most important thing is that your happy, you and your hubby are blessed to be together forever. That day is the most important date of your lifetime. That God made you as one. And yes, I love weddings!

Crunch Time

Want to tone up your tummy?

Here's a quick and convenient way to flatten your stomach

1. Lie on the floor with your legs bent, your feet flat on the floor. (Cheat's option: with your legs bent at a 90-degree angle, place the soles of your feet up against a wall. This will make it a little easier.)

2. Place your hands on the back of your head, or cross them over your chest like an Egyptian mummy.

3. Lift your shoulderblades off the ground, moving your elbows towards your knees. Don't try to lift your entire back – only your shoulderblades.

4. Squeeze your abs for a second (think about squeezing a lemon).

5. Slowly return to the starting position. Remember to breathe out when raising your body up, and breathe in on the way down.

TIP Make sure your movements are slow and controlled - resist the temptation to rock yourself back and forward just to “try to get a few more out”. It's better to do your crunches with good form than a lot of crunches with bad form.

Sick

Most of my officemates are sick today. And we know that it was all due to change of weather. Good thing there's still some medicines left in our medicine cabinet and advised them to rest at home. So expect them not to come to the office tomorrow.

Last week,Vince my nephew visited his pediatrician, he has a high fever overnight and he had cough and flu. His 'Tita Doc' advised him to take a rest from schooling for the rest of the week and needs a water therapy all though out. My other niece Reine, was so happy that she got all the baon of Vince like zesto and chocolait and all those sweets.

We should be extra careful especially these days when after a hot day suddenly it will rains. Though a little extra loads going to office, I see to it that I have a jacket, extra slipper and umbrella with me. And i took some Vitamins C now coz I hate to get sick.

Can't Stop Playing

It has been nearly fifteen years since the war between the orcs and humans ended. An uneasy peace settled over the land while, for years, the drums of war were silent. Yet the kingdoms of men grew complacent in their victory - and slowly, the defeated orcish clans regrouped under the banner of a new visionary leader.

ow a darker shadow has fallen over the world, threatening to extinguish all life - all hope. The drums of war play upon the winds once again - rising urgently towards the inevitable hour when the skies will rain fire - and the world will tremble before the coming of the Burning Legion.

The Day of Judgment has come...

I told my hubby not to let me learn how to play the games of WarCraft III -The Reign of Chaos. With its special features and cinematic trailers and its legendary heroes, you'd feel you’re really watching a real movie and you're playing with it!

It takes me one boring day to finally leave playing Tumblebugs and click the icon of Warcraft III and start playing until i want to play more and then be mindless of the time and just heard my hubby laughing behind my back as i am sticked like glue in front of the PC. That's how addicting this game is. Now, I'm in the last stage and i can't take my eyes off the screen thinking how to conquer and kill Cenarious, my main quest. Until my eyes gave up and asked my hubby to massage my back before sleeping and told him its all his fault.

I can still hear him chucking before i finally drifted to sleep and he whisper to me that the next game will be WarCraft III- the frozen throne. Goodness! =)

After the Storm

Well, typhoon Frank gave us quite a scare last Sunday dawn... we woke up when the electricity went off and the strong winds almost tearing our roof away. I immediately called my sister in our house in Pasay to checked them out and because I'm concerned with our house. Our 3rd floor rooftop is very open to wind coz it rise above any house within the neighbor. The roof had a big room which belongs to my brother before and now they converted it to a boarding room. Last time we had a strong typhoon, the roof in the left side of the room was swept by the winds and fell down to our neighbors place. Good thing no one was hurt during that chaos. My sister told me my elder sister was in 3rd floor that time with their male boarders monitoring the situation. I felt relieved. And then me and my hubby went down to checked if everything was okey in our house.

Though still raining, and as if we don't mind ankle deep floods outside our house, we went to the market to buy foods for lunch. The lights resumed by 2pm. I had a talked to with youngest sister and she said they still don't have electricity in their house and they all went to SM Muntinlupa to watch Incredible Hulk, my sister, amidst all the winds and rains still find time in malling. I laughed when she said she thinks that the typhoon was like Signal no. 4 so we don't have work today.

Well, she's wrong. We are all here in the office. But I'm glad that we are safe.

What a TGIF!

I'm kinda sad today.. maybe because i'm stressed out, or i'm not feeling well because of the weather, or i really need to relax and here i am, working non-stop.

My eldest sister called me and they will go to our house later this evening to get the printer cable of my other sis. Then it came to me that if i need to relax, maybe i could come with them to Laguna. Come to think of it, if my hubby's relatives are still in the house, so that is the time they can use our room coz they are crowded in my in-laws room no matter how big the room is.

But the idea of leaving them and what will they think of us made me reconsider my plans. Since it was an issue before that we are going and staying in Laguna during weekends knowing that my father in law is recuperating from sickness. Well, Tatay is recuperating since year 2000 and we don't know why they think that we are leaving him alone when he was with his wife, his niece, a house helper and his sister in law.

Tsk, but we also need to rest. I just think we should. Anyways, its TGIF ! meaning we will have 2 great days away from work. I should be happy about it.

Happy weekend everyone! Tira-tira!

No Time

Its been a busy and worried week for me and my hubby. Monday night, my hubby sense somethings wrong with his father. He is usually pale from sickness but that night was different. And so he decided to go to the hospital and from there, and from the result of his previous laboratory tests, the doctor decided to admit Tatay. His hemoglobin dropped from a normal 12 to 6 and he needed a blood transfusion right that very moment.

And from that admission, further tests shows that his kidney suffered much that the doctor recommended dialysis.... and he has pneumonia. My hubby joked him "bumingo ka na, Tay!" coz aside from that, he has also high blood pressure, rheumatism, and diabetes. But deep inside he is worrying not only because his doctor is asking us to ready a P50k monthly for his dialysis and the first 2-day sessions scan costs us P24k but because my hubby thinks his 67 year old father can still enjoy life if he just choose to enjoy it. But he chooses to embrace his sickness and now he can't even move a muscle to walk.

Tatay is about to discharge from the hospital today. Most of his sisters and other relatives are in the house now waiting for him, they need to discuss something very important as my hubby told me last night.

As for me, i just wait for whatever outcome. I just be on my hubby's side, make him smile and remind him not to worry much. And my family will just be there for us and God will see us through.

A Simple Healing Prayer

Got this from Milet

Dear God, we pray for the quick recovery of all the sick and the dying especially those suffering from LUPUS and CANCER. And may find COURAGE in their PAIN. Amen.

To those who will be tagged, all you have to do is keep this circulating.

Even if it’s to only one person. In memory of anyone you know that has been struck down by a serious illness like Lupus or Cancer or is still living with it. A Candle Loses Nothing by Lighting Another Candle.

Please Keep This Candle Going!

There will be a cure soon.
Continue to have Hope and continue to pray!

Now I am asking Cielo, KCee, and Mari-Dee keep the light glowing and the hope flowing!

Pretty Gifts

I'm in luck today. My sister arrived from HK last night and she immediately give her 'pasalubong' to me. It is a Esprit pants and i really like it! She also gave Giordano while polo shirt for my hubby. When it comes to shopping, we are worlds different, and i must admit, you have to buy me things that are so expensive but i won't buy it myself (ha ha ha!) But I will not say NO for those gifts from a generous giver, who wouldn't like it? And I'm glad i have a sister who are so generous like her. When she bought something on impulse and then later realized that it won't fit her or she doesn't really like it all, she will give it to us whole heartedly. And no more questions, we will grabbed it (hehe). I sent a message to thank her.

And a former officemate of my hubby gave him this cute miniature Petronus Twin Tower of Malaysia (he works now in one of the IT company there). Before, hubby told his officemates that maybe this friend of his had 'tampo' with him coz he can only heard news about him through his boys. But when he came home last week, he called my hubby and treat them to dinner. And suddenly he said that he was so thankful that my hubby gave him the opportunity to be like where he is right now and that in time, he will return to him and ask him if he is still welcome to his group (huwaah!! that was so sweet!) My hubby told him that he will display this twin towers to his table to remind him another one sweet thing left by his subordinates who are making great names in the IT field abroad.

Silangan Outing

Just got here in our house. It's a fun-filled event in my hubby's department outing in a private pool in Calamba, Laguna... it was a huge place that accommodates more than 50 persons for a 2-day event. In their department, men dominated the group that consists of Engineers and IT people so they invited the wives and girlfriends of each (so it won't be boring, they said). They thought hiring a bus would be costly, so they just asked those with cars to provide the transportation. It's feels good to see my former company which serves as the meeting place that day. I can see familiar faces and everybody greeted us (the outsiders) we can feel relax.

Once there, i helped in preparing foods while the boys are having fun. They got games like pool volleyball, their boss was a willing player and its nice to see them all bonding together. We all know that working in IT environment is a very demanding job and that kind of outing were a big relieved to their busy days at the office.

I just got in the pool only at night, we have fun singing in their free videoke machines and countless of talking and meet-ups with some of the wives and girlfriends while our hubby was busy minding their own. I've learned my lessons in my previous outing with my company and i don't get let myself get tired. Everybody was happy.

I've been one of the photographers and here's what I've got.

My hubby's boys in his network group

hmmm... my hubby's relaxing at the jacussi.

fun at the pool

they don't seems to get tired, so they tried basketball this time.

Panic Attacks: A Warning Sign?

The symptoms - pain, anxiety, shortness of breath and fear - that signal a panic attack can feel like a heart attack and doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital have found a link between the two. In a study of postmenopausal women, those who'd had a panic attack in the previous six months were four times more likely to have a heart attack in the next five years.

A panic attack may increase the risk of heart trouble by adding to changes in heart rhythm, or attacks could be a sign of unrecognised heart problems, says study author Professor Jordan Smoller. Ellen Mason, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, says stress probably plays a part in heart disease. She advises that if you've never had a panic attack and you think you're having a heart attack, go to A&E.

"Women's heart attack symptoms can be different from the crushing chest pain most men experience," says Mason. More atypical symptoms that affect women include tingling in the right arm, palpitations, pain in the jaw, arm or neck, and heartburn.

What Your Fridge Says About You

I snag this quiz from Juliana.. thanks!

Who can say that they will know you through your fridge? I just see to it that my fridge are armed with foods, drinks and some condiments i used in cooking. But the final result is wrong, I'm married and not so workaholic. Haha!

What Your Fridge Says About You

You like to be surrounded by things you love. You aren't exactly greedy, but you can be materialistic at times.

You tend to be a fairly thrifty person. You splurge occasionally, but you're mostly a saver.

You don't tend to be a very adventurous person, but you do surprise everyone now and then. You have a bit of a wild side.

You try to be responsible, but you don't always succeed. Your heart is in the right place though.

You are likely single - and a workaholic.

Another Fun This Weekend

My hubby informed me last week that they will have a team building/outing somewhere in Calamba, Laguna this weekend. Never i know that their partners will be included and the children should stay home.

It will be my first time to join in with his department's outing since i only joined him during their company's family day. But now, all their partners are included in this activities and its spells F-U-N! I hesitated at the moment, when i think of maybe some of his office buddies will joke on me for being fat. Coz, i knew most of them when I still working of their company. But he said its okey, and told me that at least his officemates will know that I'm living a 'healthy' life with him..haha! And he told me i can blend (hunyango? lol!) and go along with anyone else in the crowd and make them smile and laugh with my antics. He is so sure that i will fit in.

Okey cge, with all the flattering remarks, I'm touched..and i know he will really feel sad if i don't come so i said, yes.

Since we live near the public market place, they requested him to buy the food for their breakfast on Monday (yes, Monday.. that means i need to take a leave from work). They want tinapang bangus, itlog na maalat (salted egg) and kamatis (tomatoes) with fried rice. Sounds yummy!

Must have fun this weekend!

I'm Your Angel

After a long time, we finally used the Pioneer component my hubby bought as his Christmas gift to himself last year. I'm referring to our battle of singers in our house. Since he bought the compo, we haven't tried the using it to sing. But this time, I bought a series of VCD karaoke at Astroplus in MOA last week and I'm urging him to try to sing a song with me coz I know he's not use in singing with duets.

My hubby was a band lead singer before in his company and he was also a school choir singer (tenor) since his elementary days. And we know his voice can make places if he wants to pursue it and he even passed in the PETA audition. But his college course was way different, so he dropped the opportunity and instead work his way as engineer. And now you can only hear him singing while taking a shower or doing his work in front of his laptop. Due to his work load, he even resigned in his band to concentrate on his projects.

I'm into singing also and because of that we met when they held an audition for the company choir to perform in the 20th anniversary of the company. To make the long story short, we both made it in the choir, we had an applauded performance that night in PICC and that year, we became officially on.

So last Monday, i asked him to sing a love duets by Celine Dion and R. Kelly, "I'm your Angel" but he said he doesn't know the man part of the song.. I insisted and he tried singing with me without a microphone ( he is so vain with his voice). Our voices blend. And few more practices, we will be able to perfect the song. And I am so happy I get him to sing again. I missed that.

(You can find the lyrics of the song in the bottom page)

Too Hot

With the searing heat and the burning sun when you walk outside, it made me wish it's already the last quarter of the year. So we can have a cool wind and breeze when you go out of your house. It's so hot nowadays and we can't barely sleep and i just keep on putting baby powder on my baby (my hubby's) back coz he just keeps on tossing and turning on my side and sweating all over. Even our doggie pet, Chase can feel the heat and he wants to stay in front of the electric fan and he keeps on going back there even if we put him to his dog house.

And now, no one can stop my hubby (even me!) from buying air conditioner. He said the heat now is unbearable due to climate change. Even, if we left our window open at night, the air was too warm for comfort. And he can't risk our health and he already have a runny nose and he cited so many reasons just to justify to me the benefits of having an aircon to our room.

Well i guess, he's right and so, after his company outing (i'm going with him!) this weekend, we will scout for an aircon.

Hmmm... goodluck to our Meralco bill. Goodluck to our new expenses. Goodluck to my budgeting.

I'm Back!

After 3 days, I'm into blogging again. We had a 2-day company outing at Loreland, Antipolo and amidst the fun and laughter, comes body aches and muscles strains. And yes, because we want to enjoy the whole place that time, we explored even the deepest location of their pools. We never knew that after we went down to their endless stairs to have a better view for our picture taking, we will having hard time climbing back to our place.

We arrived at Loreland at 4pm, had our mirienda (pansit, puto and suman) went to proceed to our respective rooms that were too far from our company's gathering place. And we need to went down to a series of stairs but were satisfied because the room was spacious and we have a tv, (and yes, we watched the PBB big night) the aircon was alright and our room is overlooking the whole Antipolo! We also had a Mass and after that the games begins...

One thing i don't want in the company outing, is that they tend to mixed the fun with their own version of team building. They announced that the team building they conducted for the past months will be continued that day thru what they called 'Survivor' game. But naughty as we are, we didn't joined our team and instead we went all over the place (avoiding them) and had a time of our life posing and exploring.

I love the food, overflowing iced teas, san mig light (I didn't drink though). And there's a Band playing while we were dancing and swimming at the same time. We also had midnight snacks (lugaw and tofu) while we're wet all over. We thought of jamming in one of the videokes placed in the pool near our room but we are too tired and sleepy so we erased the idea and went to to our room to rest.

It's good that they invented the timer in the digicam. For us who want to pose all day and don't want to do the picture, its so helpful.

After breakfast, we again went down in the forest, and this time with our whole team! One thing I'm happy about is that in times like this, we gathered as one and we talked and have fun during the picture taking.

We departed at 12 noon, it was too hot and I'm starting to feel tired and sleepy.
So here's some of the pictures we had.

no entry daw pero nasa loob kami (hehehe!)

ayan, labo-labo na yan.. One team! One kapamilya! tira-tira!

Breast Cancer Awareness

Got a tag from Milet

"Let us help spread the awareness on the ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ month of June. Please help convey the importance of regular examination and early detection of breast cancer in order to catch this disease when it first erupts, maximizing the chance of survival and recovery."

These are some facts I got from Cancer Research web site. How many people survive breast cancer?

  • More women are surviving breast cancer than ever before
  • Breast cancer survival rates have been improving for more than twenty years
  • In the 1970s around 5 out of 10 breast cancer patients survived beyond five years. Now it’s 8 out of 10
  • Breast cancer survival rates are significantly higher among women from the most affluent areas compared to women living in the most deprived areas
  • Breast cancer survival rates are better the earlier the cancer is diagnosed
  • Around 9 out of 10 of women diagnosed with stage I breast cancer survives beyond five years. This drops to around 1 out of 10 diagnosed with stage I

So I advise women out there to have their breasts checked if they feel something wrong with it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a false alarm, an unnecessary worry on your part. What is important is that you’re doing your part in preventing it.

Help spread awareness. You can help the lives of many women by spreading the word about The Breast Cancer Site. If The Breast Cancer Site receives 8 million clicks on the pink button in June, their premier sponsor -Bare Necessities- will donate $10,000 for more free mammograms. CLICK the pink button today!

Now I am passing this to Kate, Charm and Yeyen to help spread the word.

The Science of Sleep

To help children get a good night's rest, learn what you can change - and what you can't

Sleep is one of the most talked-about topics among parents. We quickly learn just how important sleep is for everyone's wellbeing. For a start, it means the difference between a cheery or grumpy baby, between a calm or frazzled parent.

The importance of sleep doesn't end when a baby grows out of the cot. It's equally vital for school-aged children. A good night's sleep sets a child up for the day. It helps kids deal with the social stresses and pressures of a busy school environment and also promotes learning. Sleep is essential for growing brains.

Children have long rebelled against set bedtimes, but today there are more and more distractions to keep them awake and alert and out of bed for longer. TV, the internet, talking on the phone and playing video games all compete for their bedtime attention.

And while it may seem that your kids are the only ones still up and about at 10 pm, the reality is that many children struggle to get a good night's rest. Difficulty in falling asleep, unrefreshing sleep, trouble staying asleep, early morning awakening and nightmares are among the most common problems affecting our kids.

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?

All children differ in the amount of sleep they require. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, my son seemed to function perfectly well on a fraction of the sleep his two sisters needed. My wife and I came to realise that there isn't a mandatory number of hours for children at certain ages. Instead, there is a range for each age.

Establish good habits

Sleep experts stress that while adults may not have control over children's biology, we can assist them to develop good sleep patterns. Here are five simple ways to help ease kids into healthier bedtime and sleep habits:

1. Establish a regular bedtime. Kids may fight this, but stick to a regular bedtime during the week. They can stay up a little later on the weekend.

2. Have some wind-down time. Up to 45 minutes prior to bed should do the trick. This can involve switching off the TV and other distractions, calming the children down and cutting out snacks and caffeine.

3. Establish a bedtime routine. This might include a bath, brushing their teeth and sharing a bedtime story.

4. Reserve bedrooms for sleep. Remove the TV and computer from the bedroom. Instead, create a calm, cave-like atmosphere, the darker the better.

5. Induce drowsiness with the three sleep cues. This means maintaining a dark room, lowering body temperature and acknowledging the role melatonin plays, so work within the child's sleep cycle. A better knowledge of the biology of sleep and sleep patterns will go a long way to helping your kids get a better night's sleep.
